Carlat: Bad Week for Professional Liars

This past Friday Carlat had a great post listing a number of blows to unscrupulous marketing.

Editorial comment — Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA):

“The profession of medicine, in every aspect — clinical, education, and research — has been inundated with profound influence from the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. This has occurred because physicians have allowed it to happen, and it is time to stop.”

  1. ghostwriters for Vioxx promotions exposed (JAMA)
  2. Merck hid knowledge of Vioxx dangers, evidence of bad outcomes (JAMA)
  3. New York Time article: “high profile academic doctors who have relinquished industry ties and feel better about themselves and their profession as a result.”

Carlat’s conclusion?

It looks like the era of post-deception medicine is finally dawning.
