Scientist Chucks Left Brain for Nirvana

Be one of the many many people that have checked out this video. Jill Bolte Taylor, a brain scientist, describes her experience after suffering a massive stroke in her left brain. Her experience, oddly, was ecstatic. A piece about her ran in the New York Times on May 25.

But to really get a sense of what a powerful experience this was for her you really need to take a look at the video, which you find here. It’s really quite moving.

Taylor believes that in disabling her left brain she tapped into the pure ecstatic consciousness of the right brain. Others have described similar experiences, often related to the left temporal lobe. Some with left-temporal lobe epilepsy, for instance have described ecstatic experiences, visions. Some meditators believe they can access such states. Whether such a state represents a pure experience of the right brain we may never know.

But it seems that suggesting that there’s a clean split between the functioning of the two hemispheres is overly simplistic.

  1. To really experience Jill Bolte Taylor, I recommend you read her book “MY STROKE OF INSIGHT”. It’s 40-45% off on Amazon and it’s a New York Times Bestseller. It’s an incredible story and beautifully written – truly the best book I’ve read in a long time. It takes the wonder and magic of her TED video and expands it. Enjoy!!
